The textbook traces the development of children's literature from oral tradition to the end of the 19th century in the East, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe. For the first time, the author applies a clear distinction between the concepts of "children's literature" and "children's reading circle," allowing to trace the development of children's literature in different countries and to see the overall picture of the development of children's literature as part of the global literary process. The textbook is intended for the direction 5120100 - "Philology and Language Teaching (Russian Language)" to support the course "Children's Literature" taught in the fourth year, according to the standard and working programs. The textbook will also be of interest to a wide range of readers interested in literary history, specific issues of writers' poetics, or the literary process of a particular country.
