Towers have to leave their studies early in order to begin to provide. One low -paid work replaces the other. Her youth is “nothing more than a simple flaw and obstacle”, and, as before, Tovy longs for poetry, love and real life. While Europe is immersed in the war, she faces absurd bosses, goes to dancing with a new friend, rents her first room, writes “real, mature” poems and remains completely determined in her desire for independence and poetic recognition.
