The hero of the novel, having moved from the supervisory authority to the production association of one famous scientist, among the made discoveries and inventions achieves outstanding results on energy saving at the Bratsk Hydroelectric Power Station. The head of the hero in every possible way wants to appropriate authorship for this invention, but receives a refusal. As a result, under the pretext of an allegedly malicious violation of the regime of the inventor, the inventor is dismissed. Torn shocks and work not in their specialty, the hero tolerates a stroke, and then also a heart attack, but does not give up. In the clinic in the process of restoration, he comes to understanding the imperfection of human nature and applies all his knowledge and talent to achieve the goal - to optimize human resources up to immortality
