Shota Rustaveli is the greatest Georgian poet, who lived at the turn of the XII - XIII centuries, during the time of Queen Tamara, the author of the epic poem “Knight in the Tiger skin”. This is the only work of Rustaveli, which has survived to this day. The poem has been translated into dozens of languages, and only in Russian there are five full translations, the best of which is recognized by the translation of N.A. Zabolotsky, presented in this publication. “Rustaveli does not need our praise,” writes Zabolotsky, “since the time and people made his book immortal. He does not need an apology in cases where the moral characteristics of his heroes differ with our own ideals. But Rustaveli needs to explain and interpretation. It is necessary that the Russian reader, who is not familiar with the features of Georgian history and culture, accept the poem Rustaveli in its entirety. ” And the merits of Zabolotsky himself in this regard are difficult to overestimate
