He happened to be an actor, a teacher, a packer, and a secretary ... Jerome’s first literary experiments were unsuccessful - the publishers invariably returned the manuscripts with his stories. In 1888, at the age of twenty -nine years, Jerome K. Jerom married and spent a honeymoon in Thames in a small boat. This life experience formed the basis of the humorous story Three in the boat, not counting the dog. The prototypes of the heroes were the writer"s friends. The story was printed in 1889 and brought the author the long -awaited success. In the first two decades after the first publication, more than a million copies of the book were sold in the world, and the number of boats on Thames doubled. After a trip to Germany, Jerome composed a continuation of the story “Three in a boat ...” - “Three on four wheels” (in other Russian translations “Three on Bicycles”, “Three Abroad”) - with the same heroes who have matured for ten years, which are matured by ten years. This time they travel on bicycles along the German Schwarzvald. The story, first published in 1890, was written with the same brightness and energy, although it did not overshadow the popularity of adventures on Thames. Jerome K. Jerome. For forty years of his literary career, he wrote more than twenty plays, thirteen stories and dozens of stories. A collection of strange, unusual and funny stories “Christmas Eve” (the original English name “Stories told after dinner”) was published in 1891 and has since been repeatedly reprinted. In 1926, Jerome K. Jerom published his memoirs “My Life and Time”, and a year later he died after a stroke and was buried in the southeast of England, in Yuelm. In his hometown of Walsol, the writer’s house-museum is open.
A collection with the most famous works of Jerome K. Jerome is adorned with illustrations made by the Frenchman Auguste Ben and the Englishman Arthur Fredricks, who fully managed to convey the atmosphere of the boiling life of the British Victorian era. Illustrations for Christmas Eve with Ghosts are made in a completely different manner. Their author is a talented British painter Kenneth Matison Skiping. He began his career as the artist at the end of the 19th century, specialized in portrait painting and did not engage in book illustrations. However, the deafening success of the story “Three in the boat, not counting the dog” made him pay attention to the work of Jerome K. Jerome. As a result, a whole series of funny drawings was born that complement and decorate “Stories told after dinner.”
There were six stories and three novels in the collection of the world -famous English comedian Jerome Jerome: “Three in the boat, not counting the dogs”, “ Three on four wheels ”,“ Diary of one pilgrimage ”, illustrations for them were made by two artists - the Frenchman Auguste Ben and the Englishman Arthur Fredricks, as well as a kind of parody of holy stories -“ Christmas Christmas Arts, or stories told after dinner ”. This composition of Jerome is illustrated by the English artist Kennet Matison Landing
