The plot of the famous story of Boris Nikolayevich Polevoy (1908-1981) is based on a genuine story that happened with the military pilot Alexei Maresyev (in the book - Alexei Meresiev) He was shot down in an air battle, lost both legs, but at the cost of incredible efforts was able to return to duty and again sit down at the helm.
