The adventure of the slice

The English writer Leila Berg (1917-2012) was very loved in the Soviet Union in the 50s of the last century, more than once published separate stories in children"s magazines, and several books were published. The paradox, but her wonderful books were unfairly forgotten for many decades. Among them is the story "The Adventures of the Holder". Despite the adequate translation of the difficult text and excellent illustrations G. Valka, it was published in Russian only once, in 1959 by the "Detgiz".
This book is unusually good both sudden plot turns and stylistics. The sociable boy Joseph, a great lover of thick slices of bread, for which he received the nickname "slice" - many friends and acquaintances. They meet every day, and every day something new, funny and even unusual happens with them: for example, a beard grows up in a typewriter, and “walnuts" walks where they want, and then turn out to be newborn turtles.
But the main thing is that the slice is friends with the lady of the venerable age of Mrs. Spring. She does not occupy a sense of humor, and she also recalls with lightning speed (or invents on the go?) Funny stories about, and without reason. And the vocabulary of Mrs. Spring, all her exclamations and jokes - slap me with pancake! Jump to my pocket! Pull me into the attic and remove the stairs! Rub me dandeline! And others - just amazing!
