Uncle Monthegu lives in an old strange house behind the forest, and the only thing that violates his solitude is the visits of his nephew. It was to him that his uncle tells his terrible stories, which were either invented, or actually happened to the uncle himself when he was younger. The more we learn the details, the more tend to think that all the characters exist in fact, and all stories are based on real events.

This is what the author himself says about the book
"terrible tales" are collections of small terrible fairy tales, each book has its own storyteller. And as they read, we will gradually learn something about the narrator himself and his listeners. The action of each of the books takes place in the past - in the Victorian and Edwardian era, which are the scene of many classical English ghosts. "
