Alexander Afanasevich Potebnya (September 22, 1835-29, 1891) - Russian and Little Russian linguist, philosopher and literary critic, rightfully considered the first major Russian theorist of linguistics. Developing the ideas of the German linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt, who considered the language as a powerful means of influencing the thinking of his native speakers, studying the dependence of the picture of the human world on the language he used, the Potebnya managed in some cases to bring linguistics and poetics closer, seeing in the word a means of cognition of the inner world of the subject, which Willy-nilly demanded to attract psychological concepts. This was a significant contribution of Potebni to linguistics and literary criticism, subsequently highly appreciated by the symbolists, for whom he in a sense paved the way.
The scientific heritage of Potebni is quite diverse and multifaceted, only two of its large works are included in the present publication: the master"s dissertation “about some symbols in Slavic folk poetry” and "about the mythical significance of some rites and beliefs", in which The attention of the scientist is focused on the mythological component of symbols in Slavic languages
