Poetic collections of Joseph Brodsky "Stop in the desert", "End of the beautiful era", "part of speech", "New Stans by August", "Urania" and "Landscape with a flood" for a long time remained inaccessible to Russian readers, except for the "Samizdat" . In the 1970-1990s, these books were published by the American publishing house Ardis". Brodsky gratefully wrote that Karl Profer, one of the founders of the "Ardis", managed to maintain the continuity of the development of Russian literature and its high significance, to save many Russian writers and poets from oblivion.
The collection "Stop in the desert" was compiled by the author in Russia. It included poems of the 1960s ("Christmas romance", "Bolshaya Elegy John Donna", "A. A. Akhmatova", "In the village of God does not live in the corners", the poem "Gorbunov and Gorchaki" and other works) . Initially, in 1970, published in the Chekhov Publishing House, and in 1988, "Ardis" released a reprint.
The collection of "End of the beautiful era", first published in 1977, includes poems of 1964-1971, written by Brodsky before leaving the Soviet Union. Among them are so famous as" speech about the spille of milk ", “dedicated to Yalta", "conversation with the celestial", "Lithuanian sabotage" and others
