Interest in Slavic geographical terminology arose for a long time, almost simultaneously with the first experiments of establishing and comprehending the family ties of various Slavic "dialects". This book is one of the results of the Polesie linguistic expedition (1962-1965) The material for comparison was involved on the principle of the community of Polesie and other Slavic lexemes or the identity of semantic shifts, observed already on the example of other lexemes. Particular attention in the book is given to dialect vocabulary.
The second edition is supplemented by a number of articles close to the topics written by N.I. Tolstoy later and published in different collections.
The material of this book can serve as a source for toponymic research and solving various etymological problems, and should also attract the attention of geographers and employees of local history museums
