“Petersburg Tales” by Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809–1852) - a cycle of five works united by the scene - St. Petersburg. This is a city of deceit and illusions, a city, tempting everyone who gets into it, a city of contrasts. Weaved reality and science fiction, the author creates a whole gallery of portraits, which develop in a single picture of life. There is everything here: the splendor of the social life and the concerns of a “small” person, their hopes and experiences, depravity and insanity. This was what Petersburg Gogol saw almost 200 years ago, so he remains now. That is why the novels are still relevant and read with interest.
