The novel by A.K. Tolstoy tells about the radical fracture in Russian history in the XVI century. In the center of the story, the image of Ivan the Terrible - a despotistical, cruel, treacherous king.
The author introduces readers with numerous representatives of the Russian people: princes, boyars, peasants, warriors, songwriters, robbers. There are many historical personalities in the novel: boyar Godunov, princes - father and son of the Basmanovs, Vyazemsky, dirty, as well as the cruel executioner Malyuta Skuratov.
They are opposed by the bright images of Prince Serebryany and the boyar Morozov - patriots, warriors, smart and honest people.
