The poetry of Cheslav Milos (1911-2004), the Nobel laureate, one of the classics of Polish literature, whom I. Brodsky called his "magnetic field", was already repeatedly printed in Russia. However, the collection on the river bank (1994) is published in Russian for the first time. The verses included in the book were written in a turning point for the old poet - after visiting for the first time in half a century of his native Lithuania, concluding a second marriage and moving from the United States to Krakow. Milos sums up the results of his life saturated with events, reflects on the tragic history of the 20th century, about the meaning of literature and art, about suffering, mortality, love, aging, being, God, death and the posthumous fate of man.
