German Melville (1819 - 1891) - an American writer, poet and sailor.
From the age of eighteen, he swam Yunga on a packetball, later went on a whaling ship to the southern seas, was captured by the natives, was released by the crew of an American military ship. After long wanderings in 1844, he returned to his homeland and took up literary activity.
“Moby Dick, or White Whale” (1851) - the most famous work of Melville. The plot of the novel is largely based on the real case, which occurred with the American whaling ship Essex, which was three times rammed by a giant whale and sank in the southern part of the Pacific.
