The hero of Leo Gavrilov lives the usual life of the Soviet boy, until the war begins and his hometown Leningrad is not in the blockade. Lenka has to sharply grow up, find out hunger and hardships, get under bombs, see how people die right on the street, and his neighbors are buried in mass graves. He learns to divide a tiny ration of bread into small pieces, so that he and his mother are enough for the whole day. Dad of his classmates dies at the front, and the best friend gets into the hospital, wounded by fragments of the German shell. In the final, Lenka and Mom are evacuated along the road of life through a frozen Lake Lake. But the war on this does not end either for Lenka, or for his loved ones, or for the whole country
