In the series ABC-classic, collections of poems by Joseph Brodsky are published, repeating publications produced from 1977 to 1996 by the American publishing house Ardis. These collections were compiled by Brodsky himself in cooperation with his friends Karl and Elland Proffer, the creators of Ardis. For many years, many important works of Russian literature were published in this publishing house, whose publication in the Soviet Union in those years was not possible. After the death of Karl Proffer, Brodsky wrote about him: “He returned the continuity of development to Russian literature and thereby restored its dignity ... What Karl Proffer did for Russian literature of the 20th century is comparable to the Gutenber -Great Invention - because the Proffer re -opened the seal . Publishing in Russian and English books that were destined to never see the blackness of typographic paint, he saved numerous Russian writers and poets from oblivion, from distortion of their words, from nervous illness and despair. Moreover, he changed the climate of Russian literature itself ... [Karl Proffer] made for Russian literature what the Russians themselves wanted to do, but could not. ”
