The ballad "Lady from Shalot" ("The Lady of Shalott", 1833/1842) of the English poet Alfred tennison is based on a cycle of legends about King Arthur. The image of a lady from Shalot is inspired by one of the heroines of Arturian - a Virgin Eleine from Astolat, in love with the Knight Lancelot. A curse is imposed on the beautiful Virgin - the prisoner of the castle, she is doomed to constantly weave and observe the world only in the reflection of her mirror.
The fatal, twilight atmosphere of the ballad is skillfully transmitted by the English illustrator Charles Kiping.
Charles Kiping’s expressive and sensual drawings opened a new chapter in illustrations for books for children and youth and were awarded with several professional awards, in particular, the Kate Greenway medal, which is annually awarded to the best illustrators of children"s books. In 2005, Kiping"s illustrations for the poem "The robber" of the English poet Alfred Neues were named among the ten best workers of this competition in the entire 50-year history of its existence. The boiling was also a master of lithographic business, his work was included in many collections, including the meeting of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London
