Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) is one of the largest American poets of the 20th century. Having graduated from a law school in New York, he served most of his life in the Hartford insurance company, did not advertise his studies, was printed in small avant-garde magazines. The poet published the debut collection "Fisharmonium" (Harmonium) only in 1923, at the age of 43. In this book, philosophical and sensuality, a romantic cult of imagination and a decadent break, impressionism and acute pleasure with the sound of a word were combined. The author was not awarded instant glory: Stevens were appreciated only by the poets close in spirit (Marianna Moore, William Carlos Williams), most critics seemed to the poet’s language too “darkly”, “deliberately eccentric”. Recognition, prestigious literary awards, the status of a beloved poet of an intellectual elite will come to Stevens after more than twenty years. But out of a dozen of the most important books he published, it will remain precisely the "Fisharmonium", published almost simultaneously with such masterpieces of European modernism as Eliot"s Fair Earth (1922) and Pasternak"s Sister (1922) In the proposed publication, this book (in an expanded version of 1931) is first published in Russian completely.
