The series “Masters of the Book Illustration” is designed to introduce readers to the work of the most famous world illustrator artists. The next issue is dedicated to the British painter and watercolist John Gilbert, 1817-1897, who was dedicated to the knight Queen Victoria for merits in British art in 1872.
Being a fan of Shakespeare and Cervantes, Gilbert admired the scenes and characters that these writers gave to the world and created his illustrations for them. Of greatest interest are his work in Shakespeare"s works, including Hamlet, presented in this publication. The artist felt and realized this tragedy in his own way, however, his vision of the heroes and some scenes harmoniously coexists with the text, providing familiar images to the reader: Hamlet, his friend Horatio, Ophelia and many others
