The book includes a cycle of stories about the Russian Empress Catherine II. The years of her reign are often called the "Golden Age" of the Empire and the Russian nobility. Loud military victories, significant territorial growths, and a violent economic rise finally contributed to the affirmation of Russia as one of the great powers of Europe.
However, the author is objective and writes not only about the glorious affairs of Catherine. He does not forget the most unpleasant pages of her reign: the murder of Peter III, the death of Emperor Ivan IV Antonovich, the reprisal against Princess Tarakanova, the suppression of the popular uprising of Emelyan Pugachev.
