The stories about the children of Anatoly France, the erudite, the Nobel Prize laureate, the author of the great works "gods crave" and "island of penguins", are read easily both large and small. No wonder Paul Valerie, a poet who took the place of France at the French Academy in June 1927, in his speech noted that the style of France is distinguished by "freedom, clarity and simplicity." This book for children and about children, also known for the magnificent illustrations of Bota de Monvel, is published in Russian for the first time. Translation of Hope Buntman.

From the translator
Before the reader - wonderful, unpretentious, touching stories of Anatoly France, a French writer of the early twentieth century. It seems that almost one and a half centuries separate modern children from those girls and boys that are discussed in this book. But they still run around the grass, play soldiers and dolls, are afraid of large dogs, get sick, imitate adults. A description of the village life, children"s holiday, fishing always coexist with thin, ironic, but at the same time very deep thoughts of France about the nature of man and relations between people, it does not matter whether they are small or big.
The illustrations of Louis-Moris Buta de Monvel are surprisingly in harmony with the prose of the writer. His drawings, on the one hand, accompany the text, on the other, are completely independent. You can enjoy just looking carefully. The main features of the book are calm and kindness. Take your time, turning these wonderful pages.
