"Faust" is rightly considered the most significant work of Johann Wolfgang Goethe. The great German poet worked over this philosophical drama throughout his creative life. The second part of it was published after his death, in 1832 the Getevsky "Faust" became one of the most original works of universal literature. In scale, the plot, in style and in the depths of the raised universal problems, this poem can be compared with the "Divine comedy" Dante. At the same time, the “Faust "of Goethe is considered one of the peaks of German poetry.
The first to shift "Faust" into Russian the poet E. I. Guber. He worked on his translation for five long years. However, without receiving permission to publicate, he destroyed his manuscript. Pushkin learned about this in fact made Guber restore the translation. He helped him with advice, corrected many places, and did not accept a Guber if he did not bring with him a new excerpt from his translation. Later, "Faust" was translated by A. A. Fet, V. Ya. Bryusov, B. L. Pasternak and other poets. Moreover, they all often retreated from the original for the sake of the poetic virtues of their labor. Similar shortcomings are deprived of a translation, made by Nikolai Alexandrovich Kholodkovsky (1858-1921), which critics unanimously consider the most precisely corresponding to the original work of Goethe. It is he who is given in this publication
