Alexey Tolstoy, the classic of Russian literature, one of the most striking writers of the twentieth century, composed for children not only the famous fairy tale about Pinocchio, but also remarkably processed Russian folk tales. Later, more and more carried away by folklore motifs, he created for young readers his own fairy tales, which he combined in two cycles: “Forty Tales” and “Mermaid Tales”.
“The fairy tale,” A. Tolstoy believed, “the great spiritual culture of the people, which we collect by crumbs, and through the fairy tale the millennial history of the people is revealed before us”
