The ten -year -old Alice lives in Belgium while the First World War is flared up in Europe. At first, Alice her brothers and sisters do not want to believe that the war will come to their city. Parents whisper about this, but Alice tries not to think about the bad. But when the army and a string of refugees passes through the city, Alice"s parents decide to leave their native places. True, it turns out that there is nowhere to run. It is wiser to return home, although it becomes dangerous at home. Shells burst around, people are dying, and one morning the inhabitants begin to suffocate from unknown poisonous gas ... Alice will have to go a long way so that she can again believe in her mother’s phrase - that everything will be fine, be sure. Let not as she imagined.
