The names of the Grimm brothers, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859), great German folklorists, authors of the most famous "children"s and home tales", are probably known to everyone from early childhood. But few people know that in Russian this meeting was never properly published.
Filled by life that stored the salt of the Earth that gave rise to them, these wonderful stories for half a century were carefully recorded by brothers, obsessed with love for the word, the heritage of the ancestors creating the power of a folk genius. Tales were preserved from oblivion, becoming an invaluable property of all mankind.
One of the highest achievements of German romanticism, this collection turned the story of a fairy tale, inspired the gatherers of many countries, gave rise to a galaxy of wonderful researchers, stimulated the development of new scientific disciplines, once and for all changed children"s literature.
The translation published in this publication is the result of a long -term, begun in the 1970s, the ascetic work of one of the best domestic translators K.M. Azadovsky. He managed to maintain that freshness and liveliness, the great simplicity that marked the famous fairy tales, to convey a unique style, which won even the special name of the "Grimmovsky". Transferred by the colorful language, preserving the life -giving spirit, saturated with echoes of the original Germanic mythology, fairy tales at the same time happily avoided excessive Russification, which is inherent in most known translations.
In addition to fairy tales and children"s legends, the publication also included texts excluded by the brothers from the last edition, but at the same time representing undoubted value and sometimes even very famous (as, for example, the German version of the “blue beard” and "cat in boots ").
The article by the famous philologist-Germanist E.E. Dmitrieva, dedicated to the life and work of the brothers, as well as a thorough commentary, in which the path of every fairy tale is traced, up to its deep roots.
The design of this publication is based on the classic work of an outstanding Presrataelite artist Walter Crane (1845-1915).
It is recommended to the widest circle of readers
