The story of Larisa Romanovskaya "Blind Chicken" in 2018 entered the short list of the Booker Prize. In other words, this is the first publication of the text, written recently and addressed to adolescents. And telling about the teenager (although at the time of our acquaintance with Rita, the heroine of the “chicken ", she is eight years old, in the final part she is a ninth -grader) as they say today: sincerely and honestly - about everything: about the difficulties and dangers of this age, oh search for understanding and love.
But to call "blind chicken" "modern teenage prose" interferes with the remoteness of the time of action. The point is not even the number of "removing" years (the story ends in 1995) It is more important that this is a story about the previous era and its dramatic completion. About the fracture - and not only in politics and economics, but, first of all, in the fate of the heroes of the book and - wider - residents of the country.
An ordinary family (papa-engineer and mother-secretary, two children, a two-room apartment in a sleeping area, the old "Lada"-"Kopeyka", etc) is experiencing the Russian 90s. The absence of products (first) and salaries (then), publicity and restructuring, the State Emergency Committee and "shuttles" ... These realities, which are obscure to the young modern reader, explain detailed illustrated comments at the end of the book.
The author of the book is Larisa Romanovskaya - Laureate of the contests "Booker" (2016, the story "Delete this entry?") and "New Children"s Book" (2018, the fairy tale story "Eystie Beast")
For secondary and senior school age
