The book of a wonderful artist and writer George Yudin is a story about the life of an icon painter Egoria. The action takes place during the reign of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, the plot reflects such real historical facts as significant Moscow fires of 1564, after which mass construction was carried out in the city, the campaign of the oprichnaya army to Novgorod in 1569-1570, and the raid of Moscow Khan Devlet- Girey in 1571.
The main action of the story unfolds in Moscow. The city is shown through the eyes of the protagonist, who first came from the village: it is amazed at the size of the city and the number of its inhabitants, surprised by its structure and, of course, delighted with the beauty of the chambers and temples, the skill and talent of Moscow icon painters.
The book describes in detail the life and customs of Muscovites and residents of the village, the way of city and rustic life, beliefs and customs of that time. At the same time, the narrative is illuminated by the sincere Christian faith of the heroes of the book, their boundless devotion to their native land, respect and attention to people around them, love of work.
