Stephen Vincent Bene (1898–1943) is one of the largest American poets of the first half of the twentieth century. His poem “The body of John Brown” about the war of the north and south (Russian translation of Ivan Elagin) gained worldwide fame, making the poet “a classic during life”. No less interest is the lyrical poems of Ben, in which poets and pirates act, the inhabitants of the wilds of forest and city, where real characters are often fantastic more fictional.
