The main character Zybin is really sick and most of his life is in a state that psychologists call borderline. Sometimes the disease is aggravated and Zybin goes to a psychiatric hospital. To one degree or another, the other characters of the novel, the “close circle”, gathering in the kitchen in a tiny apartment near Pokrovskaya Square, are also sick. Painters. Musicians. Poets. But this is a certain special disease, like the one about which Raskolnikov Svidrigailov speaks, when he is ghosts, whom he does not see in a “normal state”. Yes, they live in a ghostly world, in a “social behind the world”, for in another, “normal world”, they cannot and do not want to exist: souls are too vulnerable and otherwise “configured”.
