Anna Karenina is the best novel about a woman written in the 19th century. The idea of the “Roman from modern life” arose in L. N. Tolstoy back in 1870. “He told me last night,” said Sofya Andreevna Tolstaya in her diary on February 24, 1870, “that he had a type of woman, married, from high society, but lost herself.” The first chapters of Anna Karenina saw the light in 1875 in the Russian Bulletin magazine: Tolstoy decided to present them with the public before the end of the manuscript as a whole. The publication of the novel lasted three years. Success exceeded all expectations. As one of Tolstoy’s contemporaries wrote, “every chapter of Anna Karenina” raised the whole society on his hind legs, and there was no end to the pities, enthusiasm, and germs, and disputes, as if it were about a question, each personally close. ” According to F. M. Dostoevsky, “Anna Karenina” struck readers “not only the everydayness of the content, but also the huge psychological development of the human soul, terrible depth and strength”.
