At the beginning of the twentieth century, bathing suits for girls did not at all resemble modern swimsuits. They rather resembled dresses: their main task was to cover their legs, but it was not convenient for swimming in them. So most girls were dressed on the beach, but not Gertrude Eterle. Her swimming suit was already athletic, because she was one of the first women - professional swimmers. In 1924, Gertrude won gold at the Olympics, and in 1926 - set a world record, a binding of a spill of the La -Channel. To tell this - absolutely real - story, the authors came up with Gertrude"s younger cousin named Emily. Like her famous cousin, Emily from childhood feels a craving for water, but she still does not know how to swim. Thinking in everything to catch up with the cousin, Emily begins to train secretly. While Gertrude Eterle is preparing for a big swim through the La Cans, Emily tries to set his own record - on the lake near the house.
skillfully combining text and illustrations, writer Alice Keller and artist Veronika Truttero created a book balancing on the verge between a comic book, a picture book and a small story. Both the story itself and the drawings, designed in the dim tones of the old photograph, transfer the reader at the beginning of the last century to remind: sometimes "sail against the current" is the only way to get where it should be. And to do what really likes, important and fun, no matter what anyone thinks about it.
