"Chevengur" is a unique novel by A. P. Platonov (1899-1951), combining features of utopia and dystopia, magical realism, and philosophical parable. The text also reflects ideas of religious sectarianism and Russian futurism. The main character, Alexander Dvanov, grows up in a poor Russian province against the backdrop of revolution and the Civil War. Setting out to find communism, the young man finds himself in a town called Chevengur. The townspeople are convinced of the imminent arrival of the communist Paradise. They rest from years of oppression, feed on subservient food, communalize their wives, and cruelly deal with bourgeois elements. Thanks to the revolution, the townspeople have dreams, and the main profession has become the human soul. But the desired new life does not bring happiness, disappointment leads to waves of violence, and the order of life established in Chevengur gradually falls apart...
