Winter of 1934. Otto Schmidt's expedition is preparing to traverse the Northern Sea Route from Murmansk to Vladivostok in a single summer navigation. But the project, conceived as another victory of Soviet scientific thought, faced unforeseen difficulties from the very beginning. The steamship "Chelyuskin" was not prepared for the harsh conditions of the Arctic Ocean. Trapped in the ice, it drifted for several months, then was crushed by ice and sank.
The crew managed to disembark on the ice. But what to do next – try to make their way to the shore on their own or wait for help from the mainland? The Chelyuskinites understood: they had to rely only on themselves. In the harsh Arctic conditions, they entered an unequal battle with the ruthless elements...
