The history of Russian charity was interrupted by the revolution of 1917 and for many decades is predicted. Meanwhile, the accomplishment of "small affairs" mercy was once part of a living structure that united all Russian society. In the creation of all kinds of charitable institutions - children"s shelters, the homes of hardworking, guardianship about the poor - participated, as far as possible, representatives of the aristocracy and buses, merchants and clergy, the dispenser, the proletariat and the peasantry. The care of those who needed all the peoples who inhabited Russia are shared: Russians and Poles, Tatars and Germans, Orthodox and Catholics, Jews and Muslims. Milliona donation and a modest contribution to several kopecks equally expressed a common readiness for Russians to share their prosperity with the poor.
Charity was not only a matter of moral debt, but also a symbol of public situation, high business reputation. Today, Russian charity is reborn. We see remarkable examples of the charitable activities of large entrepreneurs and corporations. But for now, we lack the broad public charity, which existed in pre-revolutionary Russia. The compassion is not taught at school, but this is what we can oppose the cold indifference to an official or ruthless enrichment of a businessman. Compassion is born from attempts to find the meaning of our life. Compassion is a personal act from which charity is born.
This book dedicated to the past St. Petersburg is facing contemporaries. The book was published by the DS Foundation Likhacheva with the participation of the IIF "Faces of Russia"
