The Encyclopedic Dictionary is one of the first studies in Russia of images created by Russian writers in the late 18th - 19th centuries. The dictionary introduces the reader to the cultural atmosphere and daily life of Russia, presenting heroes of classic Russian prose and characters of works that have high artistic value but are undeservedly forgotten. The dictionary provides a broad picture of Russian life, expanding the boundaries of established perceptions of culture, history, daily life, and the Russian national character. An article in the dictionary is a simple and accessible description of a character, determining their place in the plot of the work and in relation to other characters, their place in literature, and artistic criticism of a certain period. The Encyclopedic Dictionary acquaints the reader with people who lived in Russia in different epochs, as well as with the richness and diversity of Russian literature, the living Russian word (texts of works are widely used in the articles).
Scientific staff from the Gorky Institute of World Literature, the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Moscow Linguistic Institute, teachers from Lomonosov Moscow State University, pedagogical universities of Moscow and the Moscow region, Kaluga, and other cities of Russia participated in the work on the Encyclopedic Dictionary. The Encyclopedic Dictionary can become a universal manual for many generations of educators, students, and pupils. A dictionary with such a volume of information will also be in demand by foreign readers interested in Russian culture and literature; it can also interest translators who will be able to find new names, new works for translation.
