Vasily Ivanovich Chapaev (1887-1919) was and remains one of the brighter figures of Russian history, the legendary military leader, nugget from the lower classes, the winner on the battlefields of the Civil War. The image of a brave warrior, a skilled military leader and commander, deeply worried about combat comrades, was captured in folk memory. Thanks to the novel by Dmitry Furmanov and the film of the Vasilyev brothers, the head of the 25th Infantry Division, 15 years after his death, became a national hero who won the sympathy of millions of readers and film prisoners, including Joseph Stalin, who watched Chapaeva 16 times a year and a half. But the literary and cinematic image is far from the true historical personality - that complex, contradictory, but extremely talented and charming person, as Chapaev really was. In his book, the author creates an objective, multifaceted and most reliable image of the hero, whose life fell on the great, tragic and bloody period of Russian history
