In this book by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor V.V. Pensky, the fates of Russian military officials of the 16th century, who held middle command positions in the military hierarchy of the Russian state of that era, are analyzed based on a meticulous analysis of a wide range of sources and literature. They can be called the "centurions" of the Moscow army. Until recently, people like the heroes of the essays in this book were extremely rarely the subject of historians' attention. However, such inattention towards the "centurions" is clearly unjust. Step by step, the author of the study, telling about the lives of his heroes, reveals the picture of the history of the Russian state in a complex and ambiguous era, the creators of which were not only rulers, boyars, church hierarchs, and others, "eagerly standing by the throne," but primarily the "middle-ranking people." They led into battle the cavalry hundreds of boyar children, carried out diplomatic missions, built and defended fortresses, served as governors in cities. It was by their labors, sweat, and blood that the great state was built, yet they themselves were deprived of attention by both contemporaries and descendants. This work is intended to partially correct this injustice. Written in a lively, yet scientific language, the study is intended for teachers, students, and all those interested in the military history of Russia in the 16th century, the history of Russian military affairs, and the everyday life of Russian society of that era.
