Gustav Flobert (1821-1880) - the famous French novelist, head of a realistic school in France. He entered the world literature as the creator of an objective narrative, when the author remains an impartial observer, without imposing his assessments and preferences to the reader. Being an outstanding master of style, he created classic samples of French prose.
"Education of feelings" (1869), or (in early translation) "sentimental education" - the last novel by Flaubert published during his lifetime. The protagonist Frederick Moro, an eighteen -year -old student, met Jacques Arn, art merchant, and - fell in love with his wife. This feeling remains Platonic until the end of the narrative. Love does not bring nothing but suffering, Madame Arn feels sympathy for a young man, but does not want to cheat on her husband. And the unfortunate Moro rushes into the pool of alcohol adventures. With the history of "sentimental education", the history of his failed career is intertwined. All the hobbies of Frederick - writing, painting, jurisprudence - are barren. The action in the novel takes place during the revolution of 1848. The whirlpool of Parisian life during the years of political crisis clearly emphasizes the spiritual emptiness of the modern author of youth. In the final of the book, Frederick and his comrade summarize the years lived. And both admit that life failed - both who dreamed of love, and someone who dreamed of power.
