This book is dedicated to the history of the formation of various peoples of the North Caucasus and their cultures. The author presents in an accessible form the principles of historical interpretation of archaeological sites and, based on their comparison with data from written sources and ethnography, paints pictures of the distant past of these peoples.
A significant portion of the materials used in the book were obtained as a result of excavations carried out by the author and were first published in the first edition of the book. Essentially, the book became the first in our popular science literature on archaeology, where great attention is paid not to describing spectacular finds or the 'romance of searching for antiquities', but rather to the procedure of archaeological research, introducing the reader to the tasks and methods of archaeology as a historical discipline, opposing the simplified notion of archaeology as legalized treasure hunting.
The book is addressed to a wide range of history enthusiasts. Specialists such as historians, archaeologists, ethnologists, as well as teachers and students of historical faculties at universities, will find plenty of interesting information in it.
