The history of Jews in the Caucasus dates back to ancient times and is lost in the fog of literary and oral traditions. Modern Jews of the Caucasus retained very vague memories of their origin. But, as the travelers of the 18th and first half of the 19th century testify, the legend was still alive among the Jews of the Caucasus, that they are the descendants of the ten knees of Israel, settled in the Media by the Assyrian kings. Russian ethnographers, the essays of which were included in this collection, collected interesting historical, ethnographic and statistical information, interesting to the inquisitive reader today
