"Happiness is not as blind as it is often thought to be. Especially the happiness of individual personalities is a result of their qualities, character, and personal behavior..." - with these words, Catherine the Great summed up her long life and reign (a whole 34 years - longer than any other leader in Russian history). A princess from a remote German principality seized the crown of the Russian Empire, overthrowing her husband, but managed to turn the country into a superpower, where, according to the 'Catherinian Eagles', 'not a single cannon in Europe dared to fire without our permission'. For three decades, until her death, Catherine constantly returned to notes about her life, clarifying and supplementing them. The manuscript of the empress's intimate memories was kept under the seal of 'Top Secret', imposed by her son Paul, and Nicholas I ordered all copies of the 'shameful document' to be destroyed, strictly prohibiting even the royal dynasty from reading it.
Catherine II's forbidden memoirs are remarkably candid even by today's standards, it is a true confession, self-analysis, and self-portrait of a strong woman, much more realistic than the famous ceremonial portraits, as well as a broad panorama of life at the brilliant court, the customs of the highest nobility, the 'cares' and amusements of the courtiers.
This edition includes not only the memoirs of Catherine II, but also personal letters of the great empress to her favorites - Count Joseph Poniatowski and the illustrious Prince Grigory Potemkin-Tavrichesky.
