Franz Kafka (1883-1924) is the most mysterious European writer of the 20th century. Not receiving due recognition during his lifetime, he bequeathed to have all his works burned. However, thanks to his best friend, Kafka's writings still saw the light of day and eventually took a worthy place in world literature, with the author, as expressed by Hermann Hesse, being considered the 'uncrowned king of German prose'. 'The Castle' is one of the author's most famous novels. It combines realism and whimsicality, absurdity and mystery. Lacking a conclusion, it possibly symbolizes the wandering of Kafka's own soul.
