Young Laura lives with her retired military father in a secluded castle amidst picturesque forests of the Austrian Empire. She feels lonely after hearing about the sudden death of Bertha, who could have been her only friend. But one day, a stranger named Carmilla appears at the castle. Her carriage crashed on the way, and the girl's mother asks to shelter her wounded daughter for a while. Laura and Carmilla spend a lot of time together, but the mysterious guest reveals nothing about herself. Soon, strange events begin to occur: Laura falls ill, her condition worsens every day, and she is plagued by nightmares at night.
"Carmilla" is the first vampire thriller in the history of literature, written 25 years before Bram Stoker's famous "Dracula." The novel has been adapted for the screen multiple times. There are over 3000 editions and reprints of "Carmilla" in practically all languages of the world. Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu is often compared to Edgar Allan Poe, his gothic novels and stories have inspired horror writers for over a century.
