The novel describes the adventures of passengers of the whaling schooner-Brieg "Pilgrim", the entire crew of which died as a result of a fight with a whale. On the ship were Mrs. Weldon and her little son Jack, cousin Mrs. Weldon, black nanny Nan, Dick Sand and Coca Neevhoro. The command is taken by the fifteen -year -old Jung Dick Sand. Five blacks, saved from the ship"s disaster, help him to control the ship. Coca Neevho, who turned out to be an agent of slave traders, is deceiving the ship’s course and instead of South America, "Pilgrim" comes to the shores of Africa, where lawlessness and slavery reign. Under the leadership of Dick Sand, the heroes of the novel fearlessly meet dangers and overcome them
