The Irkutsk Bishop ordered to lock on the church bell tower of several Jewish boys who refused to be baptized. Teenagers studied at the school of cantonists, where they were sent against their will, taking off the parents and the familiar medium. There, on the open autumn winds, the bell tower, remaining without warm clothes, they almost turned into icebreakers. But the boys turned out to be stubborn and persistent and, despite the cold cutting to the bones, did not surrender. They sat on the top of the bell tower all night. The next morning, Petukhov, head of a local spiritual seminary, rose to them and asked: Well, what do you agree to be baptized? The boys answered by friendly refusal. And then Petukhov unexpectedly said: Well, stay in your faith, and there will be a God of Israel to help you.
This small historical sketch is a quintessence of those old events: on the one hand, cruelty and coercion from the state and the church, on the other hand, the dedication of helpless and defenseless Jewish children of the faith of their fathers, and with the third - an unexpected attitude of the priest. Of course, it was not always so ... "
