Readers are offered a book by the outstanding historian and philologist, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences S.A. Zhebelev (1867-1941), dedicated to the study of canonical and apocryphal gospels as monuments of history and literature. According to the author, the gospels, like any works of human thought, are best understood through comparing them with similar or closely related works. Only when such work on the gospels as historical-literary monuments is done, can they be correctly evaluated as a historical source and used for reconstructing both the biography of Jesus Christ and the foundations of Christian doctrine.
