The book was first prepared for the publication for the 550th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople by a group of students from the department of Novogreic and Byzantine Philology of St. Petersburg State University under the direction of Professor SPbSU Ya.N.Lubarsky.
The purpose of the publication is to provide the reader the opportunity to independently examine the works of four Greek historians of the XV century and form their own picture of the siege events and the fall of the capital of the Byzantine Empire. To facilitate this task, an article on the events preceding the seizure of Constantinople and biographical information about the Greek authors are included in the publication, whose works are included in the book. The same goals also serve and comments compiled in such a way as to demonstrate all the disagreements between these works and generated by them hypotheses about the death of the Byzantine Empire
