Andre Shiffrin is an American publisher, gentleman of the Order of the Legion of Honor (France), laureate of one of the most prestigious literary awards in Italy (Il Premio Cavour, 2002) He was awarded not only for his publishing activity, but also for this book, representing something between the memoirs of a professional and a pamphlet. Since 1961, Shiffrin worked in Pantheon, a division of the publishing giant "Random House", which specialized in intellectual literature. In 1990, when the new owners of Rand House began to withdraw everything from the plans that did not meet their opinion about the tastes of the mass consumer, the entire composition of the Pantheon editors filed a dismissal application. Schiffrin founded the independent publishing house "New Press", where he puts quality, not the profitability of books. Talking in detail about the prime and death of Pantheon, the author sheds light on the backstage life of large commercial publishers, and also shows the mechanisms used by concerns in the struggle for the market. But even in such conditions as Schiffrin proves, sharing the experience of the "New Press", an independent intellectual publishing house is able to survive.
