This is an expanded second edition of the book of Nicholas Merkuro and Stephen Medema "Economic Theory and Law", which had a great influence on the scientific community, the publication of which in 1998 marked the release of the most complete analysis of various schools of thought within the framework of the actively developing area of law and economy. Each of these competing, but nevertheless complemented the traditions rethought the study of law and revealed the key economic consequences of the legal environment. The book remains the right scale and the goals of the first edition, but also takes into account the evolution that occurred in this area.
The authors consider the Chicago school, the theory of social choice, the institutional "law and the economy" and the new institutional economic theory. The new chapter analyzes literature in the field of law and economics relating to social norms and today the component of an integral part of each scientific school. The chapter dedicated to the New Hive approach and the approach of modern civilian republicanism was also expanded. These chapters are supplemented by the study of the Austrian School of Law and Economics. Providing the reader with a brief description of the general contours of each school, the book covers the fundamental ideas of this area, formulating important conclusions not only for economics and law, but also for political science, philosophy, public administration and sociology
